The 5 Types Of Touch Screen Monitor Technology

1. Resistive Touch Screen

5-Wire Resistive Touch is the most widely touch technology in use today. A resistive touch screen monitor is composed of a glass panel and a film screen, each covered with a thin metallic layer, separated by a narrow gap. For instance, when a user touches the screen, the two metallic layers make contact, resulting in electrical flow. The point of contact is detected by this change in voltage.

2. Surface Capacitive Touch Screen

Surface Capacitive touch screen is the second most popular type of touch screens on the market. In a surface capacitive touch screen monitor, a transparent electrode layer is placed on top of a glass panel. This is then covered by a protective cover. When an exposed finger touches the monitor screen, it reacts to the static electrical capacity of the human body. Consequently, some of the electrical charge transfers from the screen to the user. This decrease in capacitance is detected by sensors located at the four corners of the screen, allowing the controller to determine the touch point. Surface capacitive touch screens can only be activated by the touch of human skin or a stylus holding an electrical charge.

3. Projected Capacitive Touch Screen

Projected Capacitive (P-Cap) is similar to Surface Capacitive, but it offers two primary advantages. First, in addition to a bare finger, it can also be activated with surgical gloves or thin cotton gloves. Secondly, P-Cap enables multi-touch activation (simultaneous input from two or more fingers). A projected capacitive touch screen is composed of a sheet of glass with embedded transparent electrode films and an IC chip. This creates a three dimensional electrostatic field. Therefore, when a finger comes into contact with the screen, the ratios of the electrical currents change and the computer is able to detect the touch points. All our P-Cap touch screens feature a Zero-Bezel enclosure.

4. SAW (Surface Acoustic Wave) Touch

SAW (Surface Acoustic Wave) touch screen monitors utilize a series of piezoelectric transducers and receivers. These are positioned along the sides of the monitor’s glass plate to create an invisible grid of ultrasonic waves on the surface. When the panel is touched, a portion of the wave is absorbed. This allows the receiving transducer to locate the touch point and send this data to the computer. SAW monitors can be activated by a finger, gloved hand, or soft-tip stylus. SAW monitors offer easy use and high visibility.

5. IR (Infrared) Touch Screen

IR (Infrared) type touch screen monitors do not overlay the display with an additional screen or screen sandwich. Instead, infrared monitors use IR emitters and receivers to create an invisible grid of light beams across the screen. This ensures the best possible image quality. When an object interrupts the invisible infrared light beam, the sensors are able to locate the touch point. The X and Y coordinates are then sent to the controller.

How Do Touch Screens Work

Capacitive touch screens

Capacitive touch screens work based on the electrical properties of the human body. They are made of multiple layers, typically including a glass panel coated with a transparent conductor material like indium tin oxide (ITO). This conductive layer stores an electrical charge.

01

When you touch the screen

When you touch the screen with your finger, it disrupts the electrical field on the screen. This change in the electrical field is detected by the touch screen controller circuitry.

02

Locating the touch point

The touch screen controller uses this information to determine the exact location of the touch point. This allows the device to register the touch input and perform the corresponding action, such as opening an application or moving an object on the screen.

03

Multi-touch capabilities

Capacitive touch screens also support multi-touch gestures, allowing users to perform actions like pinch-to-zoom or rotate by using multiple fingers simultaneously. This is made possible by the touch screen controller's ability to detect multiple points of contact.

04

Advantages

Capacitive touch screens offer several advantages, including better clarity and responsiveness compared to other touch screen technologies. They are also more durable and can support multi-touch gestures.

05

What Are the 3 Components of a Touch Screen

01

Touch Sensor

The touch sensor is the most critical component of a touch screen. It is responsible for detecting the position and movement of a user's finger or stylus on the screen. There are several types of touch sensors, including resistive, capacitive, infrared, and surface acoustic wave (SAW) sensors. Resistive touch sensors use two thin layers of conductive material separated by an insulating layer. When the user touches the screen, the two conductive layers come into contact, creating a change in electrical current that is detected by the device. Capacitive touch sensors, on the other hand, use a layer of conductive material, typically indium tin oxide (ITO), that covers the entire surface of the screen. When a user touches the screen, the capacitance of the sensor changes, and this change is detected by the device.

02

Controller

The controller is the component that processes the signals received from the touch sensor and translates them into actions on the screen. It determines the location, speed, and direction of the touch and sends the appropriate commands to the device's operating system. The controller can be integrated into the touch sensor, or it can be a separate component connected to the sensor.

03

Software

The software is the user interface that allows the device to respond to the user's touch. It is responsible for interpreting the commands sent by the controller and translating them into actions on the screen. The software can be a pre-installed operating system or an application designed specifically for the touch screen device.

Four Maintenance Method Of Touch Screen Display

Don't use touch screen display for a long time in high temperature environment
Do not use the touch screen in hot sun for a long time, when the ambient temperature up to 40 DEG C will cause capacitive touch screen drift, so long will lead directly to scrap the touch screen display, causing economic losses to the company or individual.

Don't let the strong magnetic field approach the touch screen display
The electromagnetic fields must be avoided when use, because the magnetic field will cause a temporary failure of the capacitive screen (serious and may even cause permanent damage). Need to pay attention to audio and other magnetic items, do not let it close to the touch screen display.

Don't let it have a serious electrostatic effect
Electrostatic effect is easy to breakdown of capacitive screen, although the surface of the glass screen capacitive touch screen display through certain antistatic treatment, but can only withstand a certain intensity of static electricity, so it is important to note that when choosing a touch screen display screen protective film, protective film to select anti electrostatic ability.

Don't let oil, sweat touch screen
Because oil, sweat and other touch screen will cover the formation of a dense layer of conductive layer and cause the screen drift, so the touch screen monitor should be away from oil and sweat.
